Nobody has a personality anymore. In a therapeutic culture, every personality trait becomes a problem to be solved. Anything too human—every habit, every eccentricity, every feeling too strong—has to be labelled and explained. And this inevitably expands over time, encompassing more and more of us, until nobody is normal. Some say young people are making their disorders their whole personality. No; it’s worse than that. Now they are being taught that their normal personality is a disorder. According to a 2024 survey, 72% of Gen Z girls said that “mental health challenges are an important part of my identity.” Only 27% of Boomer men said the same. This is part of a deeper instinct in modern life, I think, to explain everything. Psychologically, scientifically, evolutionarily. Everything about us is caused, categorised, and can be corrected. We talk in theories, frameworks, systems, structures, drives, motivations, mechanisms. But in exchange for explanation, we lost mystery, romance, and lately, I think, ourselves.

A nép vágyait megtestesítő diktátor alapjában véve demokratikus jellegű és eredetű kívánság, de ha a közösség politikai célképzetei megzavarodnak, akkor a diktátor nemcsak a közösség céljait, hanem egyben a lehetetlen célok meghiúsulását és katasztrófába torkollását is megtestesíti. A romantikus hazafi Közép- és Kelet-Európában az antidemokratikus nacionalista típusává deformálódott, azzá az emberré, {1-344.} aki a nemzeti végveszedelem állandó érzésében él, s ebben a lelkiállapotban mindjobban lehetetlennek és időszerűtlennek érzi az elfogulatlanságnak, tárgyilagosságnak, nyugalmas alkotó munkának azokat az erényeit, melyek a demokráciával járnak, s ezen az úton magával a demokratikus ideológiával is meghasonlásba jut, s az internacionalizmust a hazaárulással veszi egyértelműnek. Deformálódott Közép- és Közép-Kelet-Európában a nép romantikája is. A szuverén nép tökéletessége lehetett kezdetben romantikus fikció, de ha a nép politikai fejlődése elért arra a fokra, hogy magamagát kormányozni tudja, akkor a nép romantikája – feladatát elvégezvén – részben igazolódott, részben megszűnt. Közép- és Kelet-Európában azonban a nemzetté alakulás megrázkódtatásai közepette állandósult a nemzeti közösségek infantilis lelkiállapota, s ennek előbb-utóbb olyan történeti tapasztalatai adódtak, melyek után az a gondolat, hogy a nép magamagát kormányozni képes, hitelét vesztette, sőt ellenkezőleg, újból erőre kapott az az arisztokratikus tömegvető tendencia, mely szerint a nép eredendően kiskorú. Egy olyan közösség azonban, melyet a tömegessé vált modern közösségi érzelmek szele megérintett, soha többé a régi értelemben vett születési arisztokratizmushoz vissza nem térhet. Ehelyett megjelenik a népies tömegmegvetés vagy, ha úgy tetszik, a tömegmegvető népiesség abszurduma, melyet Hitler és Mussolini s a körülöttük lévő fasiszta elit testesít meg, akik mélységesen pesszimisták az ember erkölcsi értékével szemben, mélységesen megvetik a tömeg infantilis jellemét, s nem veszik észre, hogy teljességgel osztoznak a vezetésük alá került közösség infantilis lelkiállapotában és infantilis vágyaiban.
